Artist Survival Simulator – an autobiographical web game

ASS is a more or less auto-biographical work on the living conditions for artists. I want to share my experience of balancing the thin line between artistic delusion and economic collapse.

The game is made in twine.

Story & game design Gabriel Widing

Translation Andrea Nordwall

There is also a social rpg version of the game, in Swedish.

“I love the Artist Survival Simulator because it proves something that I’ve always suspected.  If you want to survive as an artist, it helps to come from a rich family.”

It seems an artist’s entire artistic career is based on getting grants and surviving from odd jobs in between. In fact, you can’t even make money from your art at all! However, we’re very disciplined and our monthly living costs never fluctuate from 1000 Euros. Lucky there’s no inflation.
